“What is an ecovillage?”

I’ve been noticing more about the ecovillage movement on leftist web sites ... and I find that encouraging.

After all, ecovillages are one way of going about building the new world within the shell of the old. The left should be doing more thinking along those lines.

The above article says all kinds of good things about ecovillages but then kvetches about the possible eventual need for “self-defense” at some point, I assume way in the future. I can’t imagine that concern is especially high on the current considerations list.

“An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community using local participatory processes to holistically integrate ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of sustainability in order to regenerate social and natural environments.”

[I would add]

Ecovillagers strive to:
* self-govern and self-manage their communities;
* consciously and proactively live more lightly;
* identify with and care for a particular place on earth;
. . . while enhancing quality-of-life for community members and relating in a constructive, healthy way to the broader web of life (“all our relations”).
