“Quinn referred to his philosophy as ‘new tribalism’.”

* * * *

He recognized that we were meant to live in tribes or villages.

In regard to tribes: Quinn was an advocate of finding a way to re-create tribal existence. But the resonance for his ideas went only so far because it’s clear that we won’t be going back to tribal living.

In regard to villages: Our messaging should not be framed as “going back,” but rather as going forward toward a resolution of the problematic social and ecological issues consequent of the historical period called “ascent into civilization.” We should talk about an eco-communitarian primitive/modern synthesis where an ecovillage ethos could be generally manifested within a vision of relocalization and a bioregional reorientation of society.
