In hypermodern mass society the mega-states and mega-corporations rule.

The internet is probably the most mass phenomenon in all of human history.

So guess what:

* Hyper-commercialization (it’s all but unbearable; to keep from being subjected to the pop-up advertising I copy the text of an article into a document and read it off-line)

* Encroaching control by the authorities (they attributed Brexit and Trump to internet “disinformation,” so they had started to clamp down prior to 2020; then they decided that with the “international public health emergency” of the pandemic they needed to tag and try to constrain “malinformation” … like, anything contrary to or critical of their policies)

So now, as in most areas of hypermodern mass society, the mega-states and mega-corporations have asserted their domination over the internet.
