The socialist movement dates back two hundred years now (to the 1820s). With all that momentum, it figures that a project to transition the left “from Red to Green” is going to take a while.

You can get a sense of how far we’ve already come by noting that socialists almost invariably now include ecological concerns in their considerations and in their messaging:

We likely will go through a long period of Red-Green alliances as we incrementally make our way toward the full embracing of a post-Marxist ecosocialist ideology on the left.
