so what’s our beef with Western Civilization?

it’s a question of its relationship to nature

I think if an Indian of 1491 was transported to the New Jersey of 2024 they would be upset and disparaging of what Western Civilization hath wrought here over the last four hundred years. They wouldn’t understand what the problem is, but we can understand. It’s a wrong way to live. It has an attitude about “conquering nature.” It values mechanization and industrial-scale development. It has little appreciation for social or ecological limits and balances.

Its misguided trajectories have been toxic and pernicious. The consequence has been the growth of a Leviathan hypermodern reality that’s stressful on people and on the planet.

It’s led humanity to the precipice of a social crisis and an ecological calamity. It’s fostered lifeways wherein, through “progress and development,” we’ve lost more than we’ve gained
