Some were disappointed with our 2024 vote total. But it clearly just wasn’t a year when a lot of people were inclined to vote “outside the box.” As a basis of comparison: In 2016 more than 5% of the electorate did so, but this year less than 2% voted for a third-party or independent candidate. In 2024 a considerable amount of the “alternative” vote went (unfortunately) to Trump.

Yet it’s notable that, for the first time since the Nader campaign of 2000, the Greens came in third in the election. It suggests that at the presidential level we should always try to run a candidate with at least some extent of prominent name recognition. Indicative is that “Jill Stein” was among the “Top trending people” re: “What Canadians Googled the Most in 2024” . . .
