On November 5, 1991, Maxwell was last in contact with the crew of his yacht, Lady Ghislaine, at 4:25am, but was found to be missing later in the morning. It has been speculated that he was urinating into the ocean nude at the time, as he often did. He was presumed to have fallen overboard from the vessel, which was cruising off the Canary Islands. His naked body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

(It’s likely that Logan Roy and his children in the HBO drama Succession are based at least in part on the Maxwell family.)
