I recognize that I’m usually hovering at a level that’s one of vision and imagination. I do believe that “toward a bioregional reorganization of society” is a correct perspective, but its realization will be far, far off. Few people are currently going to be very motivated to start walking the long road toward that destination. And, meanwhile, of course, there are always thorny issues of immediate concern. Circa 1900 it was “revolution or reform?” Circa 1920 it was: “Bolshevism or social democracy?” Circa 1990 it was (and remains) “Red or Green?” In Britain now: “Stay out or get back in?” And it’s thorny, indeed, because our key value of decentralization could be interpreted to mean: “Stay out.” Yet the Greens are leading the movement to get back in.

It raises some very complex issues re: values, identity, nationalism, relationship to modernity, and, yes, vision and imagination . . .
