the prospects

The overarching theme of my book has to do with where we’ve gotten ourselves to and where things figure to go from here:

This is the peak of the unsustainable parabolic trajectories re: population, production, consumption, pollution, depletion. Peak of “development” (transforming natural landscape and habitat into human landscape and habitat). Peak of the Anthropocene.

Unsustainable trajectories of population, production, consumption, pollution, depletion, over millennia.

We face a “Long Emergency” period (hundred of years, maybe a thousand) of devolution, depopulation, and decentralization. Devolution of power. Deconstruction of the Technosphere and the social Leviathan (monstrosity). A “settling back” into living more simply, more lightly, more locally.

It will involve plenty of disruption, pain, disorientation, malaise. The purpose of our movement — the “greening of society” movement — will be to model positivity to the greatest extent possible under trying circumstances. Ecovillages as lifeboats and basecamps. Networks of ecovillage communities as the basis for the eventual bioregional reorganization of society.
