The Maplewood air was filled with positivity for a brief moment of time
Somewhere, out there, geopolitics was filled with dread (of nuclear annihilation, no less). Imperialism swirled in Africa and Asia. Racism was right down the road (if you went east five miles on South Orange Ave into the heart of Newark). It was pre-Feminine Mystique. And Exxon was Esso.
But, for an interlude, the “out there” and pending negativity didn’t seem to touch . . . 1940s families at Grunings . . . 1950s dates at Grunings.
The shieldedness couldn’t last and the shattering began. It’s associated with the Kennedy assassination, but I think that was coincidental, not causative. The swirling negativity was bound to encroach.

Comments:
* favorite dessert ever: the toasted pound cake with coffee chip ice cream and hot fudge I got at Grunings when I was at South Orange Jr. High and Columbia HS.
* I grew up in Maplewood. It was always a favorite place for my family, including cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents, etc. to go to celebrate anything and everything. Grunings coffee ice cream with either their fudge or butterscotch sauce are the best I have ever had, ANYWHERE!
* Grew up in South Orange and Grunings was a big part of my life. Spent so much time there eating hot fudge sundaes — nothing better. We ate there, hung out there, went on dates there.
* My parents took us there quite often after ice skating or walking at the Reservation in West Orange. Going there was one of the most special memories I had as a child. Makes me nostalgic for what was yesteryear.
