A fifth of German citizens are attracted to the AfD because that party says the flood of immigration must stop.

Should we paint that 20% of people as evil-minded?

It’s a complex issue that will be growing for the foreseeable future. The socio-economic conditions of our society (and the ecology of the earth) can’t decently support eight billion people. So the wars and scarcities will be driving more and more people to flee from the miserable areas to the less miserable areas.

The 20% who are resentful enough to support the AfD didn’t create the misery in Ukraine or Syria or Libya. What they’re reacting to is the fact that the flood of migrants is disruptive in many ways.

I’m afraid we have to sympathize with both the migrants and the resisters. There’s no resolution to this except the chastening of the human race. Good luck with that.
