Parties should represent distinct ideologies

In Germany, for example, voters are presented with a choice of parties representing liberalism, conservatism, socialism, libertarianism, environmentalism, and nationalism. Candidates, then, can run in a positive way as proponents of their party’s distinctive platform. In an only-two-parties system candidates tend to run in a negative way against the other choice.
