“Increasingly, access to cultural life is paywalled.”

. . . and at a high price. Big Sports, Broadway, etc.

Who goes? The upper ten percent. They live in the modern cosmopolitan upscale world. It represents the highest standard of living in world history. Ten percent of the population in the advanced industrial-capitalist countries.

About sixty percent do OK. They can afford a modest home and they can cope.

Life sucks for the other thirty percent. They have nothing, tend to be more or less dysfunctional, dependent, despondent.

* * * *

Ten percent are terribly affluent. They and the middle sixty percent “hold up the sky.”

For thirty percent it’s mostly malaise.
