James Taylor wrote:

The Secret of Life is enjoying the passage of time.
Any fool can do it, there ain’t nothing to it.
Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill.
But since we’re on our way down …
We might as well enjoy the ride!

The secret of love is in opening up your heart.
It’s OK to feel afraid, but don’t let that stand in your way.
Cause everyone knows … love is the only road.
And since we’re only here for a while
We might as well show some style.
Come on, give us a smile . . .

Isn’t it a lovely ride!
We’re sliding down, just gliding down.
Try not to try too hard …
It’s just a lovely ride.

The secret of time is that time isn’t really real.
It’s just your point of view … how does it feel for you?
Einstein said we could never understand it all
Planets spinning through space, the smile upon your face,
Hey, welcome to the human race!

Isn’t it a lovely ride?
We’re sliding down, just gliding down.
Try not to try too hard
It’s just a lovely ride.

This is a sagacious perspective.

Though James got one thing wrong . . .

I was watching the National Geographic biopic series about Einstein:

Einstein wound up disgruntled, disappointed, and depressed. He was smart but he lacked wisdom.

James Taylor: “Einstein said we could never understand it all … “

But if James watched the series he would see that Einstein’s problem was precisely the opposite. He thought we could and should understand it all.

He spent the frustrating last thirty years of his life struggling to put it all together into a “Unified Field Theory.” He didn’t even come close. (And no one has since.)

My guesstimate is that we humans might be able to understand approximately two percent of All There Is To Know; my calculations, rounded up to the nearest hundredth, indicate somewhere in the range of one percent and three percent. A genius like Einstein might be able to understand four percent.

He was unwise to think in terms of one hundred percent. He’d have been happier if he learned to play “Secret of Life” on his cherished violin.
