It's quite dramatic. At first the progressives in the House said they would NOT vote for the infrastructure bill unless it was paired with their New Great Society bill. Pelosi shot that down. Now they say they won't vote for the infrastructure bill unless they're seeing "significant support" for the NGS bill. But in the Senate Sinema is not supportive and Manchin says he'll only support $1.5T, not $3.5T.
It's 10pm and Pelosi is trying to get enough votes to pass the infrastructure bill tonight. I'll predict that the progressives will give her just the minimum needed from their caucus to obtain passage. The rest will vote NO as symbolic of how they really feel. But my prediction is that Pelosi will win out. And then the NGS bill will get pared down to the point where the progressives really won't be able to claim it as all so transformational. Maybe, in the end, they'll say it is, anyway, and Manchin will say it's actually quite reasonable, anyway. Maybe the limit of all the recent governmental largesse will have been reached.
