Is the United States an empire?

In Against His-story, Against Leviathan Fredy Perlman pointed out that there are two ways imperial dominance can be manifested: He called one a “worm” and that’s the typical military juggernaut overrunning all in its path, like Rome, the Mongols, the Spanish in America.

He called the other an “octopus.” The U.S. has been that kind. Corporations, financial institutions, governmental agencies of all kinds (“aid,” military, “consultation,” intelligence, etc.) as tentacles of power.

So instead of calling the United States an “empire” we can refer to it as an “imperial power.”

The most dominant in all of history.
