I just can’t take It

1 min readJul 21, 2021

Clearly I’m a wuss. I give up too easily. I should grow a spine and confront It.

For example:

In my twenties I enrolled in a graduate program to get a Ph.D. in Economics. The subject matter turned out to be absurdly esoteric, cryptic, complex, and abstruse. I still talk to some of my classmates who made it through and can tell you that each has developed their own idiosyncratic Bayesian model that they swear reflects the real economy and yet never can predict the three-month-hence rate of inflation:

In regard to my graduate program, I punked out, did nothing but read the three volumes of Das Kapital, and settled for a (very useful) Master’s degree in Marxian Economics.

With no career path flowing from that I got into IT. What a trip! Did someone say esoteric, cryptic, complex, and abstruse? I shoulda grown a spine and confronted IT. Instead I established a life pattern of staying up all night doing Green activist work and then sleeping at my desk during the day at my place of employment. (I was retained on the payroll because I brought bagels in to the office every morning from a special little bagel store that made special little bagels and a dreamy whipped-cream-cheese-with-chives spread.)
