How serious is the threat?

In his latest interviews you can see that Noam Chomsky (among many other leftists) is very concerned that the MAGA phenomenon has the potential to lead to a full-blown fascist movement in this country.

That’s the sentiment underlying a mainstream-media article like this one:

I’ve observed such kvetching through my whole time, fifty years, as a leftist activist. Is the threat really more serious now?

. . . “America” as high expectations. Not delivering for the red zones:

MAGA is about: “My expectations are not being met. Moreover, I feel threatened with losing the source of my identity, meaning, purpose. I blame it on the encroachment of those Others (immigrants, indigents, deviants).”

If it were combined with a period of material privation it could be incendiary. That’s what happened in Germany during the 1920s.

But it hasn’t happened here, yet. The marginalized in America suffer plenty, but to date there’s been lots of food and stuff and entertainment.
