Here’s an idea that could shake up the system

Some say we should avoid running for president. But we pretty much have to field a candidate for president because: (a) our ballot lines depend upon it; (b) our supporters want to see a Green on the ballot to vote for at all levels; and (c) not running a candidate would leave the significant alternative vote to the Libertarians.

I believe the US electorate is slowly getting a sense of having two major parties (Dem and Rep) and two minor parties (Green and Libertarian). So we should run. But if we’re going to run at that high level, I think we should try to recruit a high-profile candidate.

Idea:

On November 4 start reaching out to Stephen Colbert. He’s a critic of the system from the left. He has already indicated a taste for being a candidate with his 2008 South Carolina “favorite son campaign.”

Appeal to him to do something dramatic to shake up the system. Work on him for four years.

He might go for it.

He might even win . . .
