He believed there could be a humane and admirable socialism. He tried really hard to shift the Soviet Union onto a path in that direction. But the Soviet Union was fatally autocratic. It was founded upon the basis of a problematic value system (that of industrial development). It was forced into a militaristic posture. So Gorbachev really didn’t have a chance. His frustration was almost palpable.
