Slim pickins’.

The duopolistic system and the political culture of the United States make it exceptionally hard for alternative parties to get a foothold.

One day there will be a breakthrough. If Ross Perot in 1994 had been more serious there could have been a Reform Party. If Ralph Nader in 2002 had been less of a loner and more of a party politico there could have been a growing Green Party. If Donald Trump in 2022 had gotten pushed out of the Republican Party and gone rogue there could have been a Patriot Party (heaven forbid!).

But circumstances will come together at some point where just the right opening and just the right personalities will coalesce to break open the system. I can’t imagine that a hundred years from now the sorry American electorate will still have only two significant choices election after election.
