David Dinkins and I were in DSA together

David Dinkins died yesterday.

He was a terrific guy. My father and he were best friends during the latter part of their lives. They celebrated their birthdays together every year because they were born within three weeks of each other in July, 1927. So I had a chance to lunch with the mayor pretty often at their favorite haunt, the Friars Club in NYC.

Dinkins was from Trenton and I live in the same county, Mercer. We reminisced about the good old days when central NJ was much quieter, almost pastoral. We also noted that both of us were in DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) back in the 1980s. Not many people know that David Dinkins was quite the firebrand when he was in his prime.

The last time I saw him was when he attended my father’s funeral in 2014.

Here’s a clearcut case of retrogression: The idiot Rudy Giuliani defeated David Dinkins in the race for mayor in 1993.
