More than 40 nations agreed to stop investing in the production of coal power over the next two decades. The United States was not among them. High-level representatives of China and Russia did not even show up at the summit.

Obama made a speech saying, “Our generation didn’t do enough.” And Greta’s impatience is a good motivator. Nonetheless, it’s actually always better to be proceeding under the guidance and perspective of realism and plausibility. Unrealistic expectations lead to frustration and disappointment.

There has begun a turning toward greening in our time. The fact of the turning itself is very, very, very significant. The realistic perspective is that we’ll be trying to turn a ship of state that has enormous inertia and has gone very, very, very far off course. The ship will have to be turned around and carefully guided through very, very, very rough seas.
