I wondered for years why people would think the Soviet Union under totalitarian Communism was a mess but China under totalitarian Communism is dynamic and successful.

Totalitarian Communism sucks. The industrial state is a Leviathan under conditions of hypermodernity whether the productive assets are owned privately or publicly. Capitalism is ruinous and Marxism is 19th-century-optimistically impaired. When states are too large, too industrial, and too financialized (like the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Great Britain, Germany, France, India, and about a hundred others) the investment monies and fiscal allocations slosh around in maniacal torrents. Boom and bust, boom and bust, industrial capitalism and totalitarian Communism.
