but, hey . . . how about . . . gay marriage . . . ??
I say there’s been no progress.
I say lifeways were perfectly fine right here in 1491. As socially satisfying as our own. As culturally enriched as our own. And, meanwhile, more sustainable than our own. And then after 1492 the Europeans came and did their “development” thing. And what they hath wrought can hardly be termed “progress.”
But people say to me: “But. A hundred years ago a college education was limited to being a male prerogative. Now 60% of college students are female. We elected a Black president and a Black-Asian vice president. We sanction gay marriages.”
So, OK, yes . . .
I do have some faith in human intelligence. The social movements have been encouraging in that respect. Our “greening” movement is a basis for hopefulness.
I think there can be and will be progress of the latter kind when we determine to un-do the consequences of the other kind . . . the misguided developmentalist kind of faux “progress.”
