A scatter-brained society

People scatter. They go off to college and don’t come back. They lose attachment to place, family, community.

This modern way of living dates back about three hundred years. For 99.9% of our species-existence the vast majority of people lived in bands, tribes or villages: a couple of hundred mostly familiar people attached to, knowledgeable about, a particular place-on-Earth. A home place.
