Toward building the new society within the shell of the old . . .

Some progress is being made at COP26 in Scotland. However, as Greta Thunberg is voicing on behalf of the younger generations, we’re not going to be able to just rely on the governments of the world to accomplish the deep transition of lifeways that will be necessary for the greening of our society. Governmental reforms and mitigations are important, but the rest of the transformation will be up to us. Responsibility will fall to individuals, households, businesses, and communities.

One particular vision of “what can be done” has started to emerge in the melding of the ecovillage and bioregional movements.

Ecovillages can model environmental “best practices:”

Networks of ecovillages can become the basis for a new bioregional organization of society:

Here in New Jersey, over the winter we’re going to be brainstorming a variety of projects that could be sponsored under the auspices of the eco-education center that we have in mind to situate on the Hillsborough property. Many such projects will be relevant to an endeavor to start “building the new society within the shell of the old.” Meanwhile, participants will develop a sense of community as we work together. We can be studying about and discussing “where to go” visions such as bioregionalism, regenerative gardening, cooperative economics, and others. We’ll consider what could eventually be manifested at the Zion Road site.

It’s a step forward for Ecovillage New Jersey that we now will have a base of operations. Join us this Sunday afternoon if you’d like to tour the site and hear more about our plans. We’ll make time for the “Toward Fostering Bioregional” Meetup members to discuss the book they’ve been reading: Dwellers in the Land.
