This is a valid and interesting debate.
Pro-growth leftists always say the problem is capitalism, the profit motive.
I think the problem goes deeper. Ecologically, we’re way past overshoot. And how about the social quality-of-life issues consequent of mass society, hypertrophy, complexity, and anomie? Such is endemic to the industrial state whether society’s productive assets are owned privately or publicly.
In a certain sense the debate doesn’t much matter. There’s little chance to implement the supposed solution of the eco-modernist leftists: effective state-led economic planning. They’ll keep advocating it over the decades and centuries that things will, frustratingly, keep coming apart.
